Scottish Government has published Supporting children and young people experiencing a mental health crisis: framework, setting out principles for how crisis support should be developed and delivered across Scotland.

Read the framework here: https://www.gov.scot/publications/supporting-children-young-people-experiencing-mental-health-crisis/

The framework gives clear recognition to the distinct needs of rural and island communities in best practice when supporting children and young people (CYP) experiencing a mental health crisis. It highlights how geography, travel distances, weather disruption and transport availability can affect timely access to crisis support, particularly where specialist services or inpatient care require mainland transfer.

It also acknowledges workforce capacity challenges and the importance of flexible, partnership-led responses involving health, education and third sector services, to help ensure children and young people receive equitable, person-centred crisis care regardless of where they live. Overall, it reinforces the need for locally responsive models that reflect the realities of remote and island settings.
