Message in a Bottle Isle of Eigg.

Read stories of a carbon neutral future by school pupils from the Isle of Eigg.

  1. Arlo, Primary 1 – Eigg Primary School

My name is Arlo. My island is Eigg. When I grow up I will work as a lumberjack. When I wake up, I flip pancakes (using eggs from Granny’s chickens). To get to work, I cycle. My job is climate-friendly because the wood is used for building. My island is powered by Eigg Electric Team energy, which doesn’t harm the planet. After work, I go home. My house is climate friendly because I love the sea. As a community, we look after our island’s environment by growing more plants. My future daily life on my island could be more climate friendly if we recycle more rubbish.

  1. Colm, Primary Two – Eigg Primary School

My name is Colm. My island is Eigg. When I grow up I will work as an artist. When I wake up, I eat porridge (oats grow in Scotland). I travel by electric car (no fumes). My job is climate-friendly because I work at home. My island is powered by electricity made by water, which doesn’t harm the planet. After work, I go home. My house is climate-friendly because my house is made of word. As a community, we look after our island’s environment by cleaning up rubbish. My future daily life on my island could be more climate-friendly if we make more electricity.

  1. My Future Sustainable Island – Freya, Eigg Primary School

When I grow up, I will work as a gardener and sell vegetables and flowers. This is climate friendly and does not produce carbon dioxide. To get to work, I will cycle because it is good for the environment because it also does not produce carbon dioxide.

When I wake up, I will go for a warm shower that is heated from wood that is from Eigg. After that, I eat porridge made from oats that are grown on Eigg.

My island is powered by windmills, solar panels and hydros. My house is climate friendly because it is well insulated and is made of wood grown on Eigg. I also have solar panels on the roof of my house that heat water.

As a community, we look after our island’s environment by planting lots of trees and doing beach cleans.

  1. My Future Sustainable Island – Tadhgan, Eigg Primary School

I am called Tadhgan and I work as a photographer on the Isle of Eigg.

When I get up in the morning, I put some porridge on to cook. The porridge is made from oats grown on Eigg, which are also organic.

After the porridge, I have a shower using hot water that is heated by a fire, which burns wood grown in the Eigg Forestry. I also have a solar panel which heats the water. I get to work on a bike as I cycle everywhere so it does not harm the environment. I take photographs of the animals and plants on Eigg so that I can see if any of them are decreasing in number.

When I get home I light the fire, using wood from Eigg. My house is well insulated, so it keeps warm for a long time. For dinner, my favourite is brussels sprouts, fish, peas and potatoes. I grow all the vegetables.

I try not to produce rubbish and recycle whenever I can.
